The Town of Lake Cowichan sits on the shores of Lake Cowichan and the protection district is split in the middle by the world renowned. The River itself is one of the most popular fly fishing rivers in BC. The river is also very popular with white water rafters, kayakers and in the summer it is not uncommon to have several hunred tubers float down the river. The Lake is a popular destination for South Island boaters and on a summer's long weekend it is common to have hundred of water craft up and down the lake.
With all this activity on a swift moving river, strewn with large boulders and trees of all shapes and sizes as well as a long large deep water lake, accidents happen. Lake Cowichan Fire identified the need for a highly skilled and equipped rescue team able to respond to perform rescues on the river. we work closely with neighboring departments, Cowichan Search and Rescue and the RCMP
Lake Cowichan Fire has one 2013 Polaris 16’ foot Rigid Hull Inflatable Boat as well as a rapid deployment craft and an assortment of water rescue related equipment.
